L7
L7 — Principal / Distinguished (ambiguity, org design, precedent-setting)
At L7, the interviewer will deliberately give you an ambiguous problem. The signal is not the final architecture — it's how you resolve ambiguity, set precedents, and turn a vague brief into a fundable proposal.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Resolve strategic ambiguity across multiple teams
- Set the technical direction for a product area or platform
- Trade off engineering, business, and org considerations together
- Establish precedents future engineers will inherit
Interview signals
- You reframe the problem before designing (root cause vs symptom)
- You propose a small number of architectures and pick one with rationale
- You explicitly reason about org design and ownership
- You compare against real-world precedents (Netflix, Uber, Meta)
Problem focus
- Kafka-like Streaming Platform, Distributed DB, Global File Storage, Ad Serving
- Extreme-scale variants of intermediate problems
- Company-wide platform proposals
Delivery advice
- Spend the first 5 minutes explicitly reframing the problem — don't just start designing
- Name at least one precedent for every major decision
- Present two viable architectures and choose one with reasoning
- Talk about which team owns what and how you'd staff it
